With the wings of faith and myth

November 6 - November 30 2021

“Since my Angel is no longer guarding me, can carelessly spread its wings
and the silence of the stars in the two to tear because, of my lonely night,
I should not to hold the anxious hands anymore,
when my Angel no longer watches over me.”
(Rainer Maria Rilke, 1875-1926)

Wings are angels’ signs. They are a message that angels are near us, around us. They are also a tool, a vehicle. It is the thing that is missing from getting us higher. A symbol, that if we wear them, we will be able to throw away whatever burdens us.
What about you? Have you ever imagined yourself flying? Wearing wings?

In Elephant Design you will find those created by Afrodite Papadouli, the ones that she has imagined, the ones that she has used to fly. But our words are not as important as the artist’s words:

“After a sudden reversal which occurred in my life last August, I had to challenge myself in order to stand on my feet: to take on things that I had not dared before. I had time on my side, and I had the will to do it!
So, I started sculpting! I started making angels. I encountered many obstacles, but the important thing was that I believed that I could do it. I made wings in various ways and sometimes I would wear them. Creating three-dimensional artworks was going over my limit, and that was necessary, as I had to face a new reality. This transcendence led me to angels and wings. Looking back at my work of the past ten years, this was expected, as during this time both angels and mythological winged heroes had found their way into my painting. My belief in angels has been a blessing in my life, one of liberation! A friend once told me: ‘’When you need to see something, you see it”.
Even if this is the truth, I am glad that I need to see the light.

In this exhibition I present artworks mainly from the last three years, focusing on the wings of faith and of myth.
