Psycho [ logic ]
January 21 2022 - February 15 2022
“The eye should learn to listen before it looks.” (Robert Frank)
Iraklis Kougemitros speaks another language. A language that we don’t speak, but yet we understand. Because we do not always need words to communicate deeply. We need stimuli, symbols, concepts, images, emotions.
Iraklis finds all of the above on the street. He starts a dialogue with the shadow and the light, with humans as a figure and as an idea, with the buildings and their lines. He starts a dialogue full of opposition. A dialogue that is open to the viewer.
He doesn’t photograph the moment, he photographs the history of the moment.
He photographs our relationship with the urban environment. And he presents us with a brand new reality that does not contradict ours but coexists with ours. Even completes it. And Iraklis’s reality lies in the details, in the tenths of a second. It is impressive.
Iraklis introduces himself as a street photographer (among other things). He walks on the same street we walk on, but that our eyes stubbornly refuse to see. Could it be that he photographs his own internal street?
To be honest, now that we come to think of it, Iraklis does not speak another language. He creates a new one; a language that is completely his own.
He names it Psycho [ logic ]. Let's listen to it…
