Maria Selkou + Art of the Blue studio
Maria Selkou is a Greek architect and visual artist currently based in Athens. From 2014 to 2021, Selkou worked in the Netherlands, specializing in the design of bridges and infrastructure.
She created the “Art of the blue studio” in 2018 in the Netherlands. Her goal was to bring the cyanotype technique back to the light and to create tangible memories, in the shades of blue. Her need arises from her architectural influences as well as the intense blue hues of the Greek summer. Cyanotype is a photographic printing technique discovered in 1842 by Sir J. Herschel. It is based on the interaction of a chemical ferrous solution with sunlight. The exposure of the object takes place under sunlight, and the printed result has blue tones. Printing can be done on paper, fabric and various materials. The unpredictable nature of this process is what makes it so fascinating, as it lends uniqueness to each project. It is a creative printing game with light.
